First Year Seminar

Kickstart your college journey with a first-year transitional seminar! These engaging courses are designed to help you excel academically, build essential life skills, and feel connected to your campus community. You’ll gain tools to thrive in all areas of college life, from time management and study strategies to health, wellness, and social engagement.

The College of Social Science offers several sections of our First-Year Seminar (FYS) exclusively for Social Science majors. These small, supportive classes teach the skills and strategies you need to succeed in college and beyond. Through hands-on activities and personalized guidance, you’ll master essential skills like effective study habits, note-taking, time management, and academic planning. Our FYS also connects you to vital campus resources, university services, and a network of peers and mentors.

With an emphasis on holistic success—academics, social engagement, and well-being—you’ll feel empowered to make the most of your college experience. Plus, our small class sizes foster strong relationships and a true sense of belonging within the College of Social Science and at MSU.
